How to Write Notation in LaTex

Learn how to write Inline Expressions, Mathematical Equations, Series and Symbols

In this article we will learn how to write notations in LaTex document preparation system. LaTex is specifically used for communication purpose and publication of documents in the field of science. It is widely used by mathematicians, engineers, scientists, researchers and linguists. Therefore, LaTeX is suitable for technical writing such as complicated and complex mathematical formulas, math and physics equations, bibliographies and indexes into a document. A LaTeX input file can be written in an offline text editor or online text editor. This input text file will contain text and commands for formatting.

  1. How we can write Inline Expressions

There are two approaches of typesetting math in LaTeX one is embedding the math directly into your text by enclosing your formula in dollar signs and the other one is using a predefined math environment but we learn only inline expression technique. In this technique we enclose mathematical formula or expression in single dollar sign ‘$’. In other words, inline expressions take place in the middle of a sentence.

Now we are writing an example code in LaTex and let’s see the output of that example code.

  1. How we can write Mathematical Equations

There are 3 methods of write a math equation in LaTeX and they are described as follows:

INLINE: In the above example we learn how to write inline expression in LaTex. The mathematical expression between two-dollar signs occurs middle of the text is called inline Expression.

EQUATION: In mathematics equations are mathematical expressions for solving problems that are given their own line and these are basically centered on the page. These are generally used for important equations that demand to be displayed on their own line or for large equations that cannot fit inline. To create an inline expression, we place the mathematical expression in between the backward slashes, brackets and symbols.

Let’s see an example of LaTex mathematical equation.

DISPLAY STYLE: The command \displaystyle is used to produce a full-sized inline expression in LaTex.

  1. How we can write Series

What is series in mathematics? The simple answer is, a series in math is simply the sum of the different numbers, or elements of a sequence. For example, to make a series from the sequence of the first six +Ve integers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5,6, just add the numbers. So, 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 = 21 is a series. It’s very simple. This series is made from a number of finite sequences; therefore, this type of series is called finite series.

On the contrary, the Fibonacci series is an infinitely long sequence of numbers, this series made up by adding together all the Fibonacci numbers and it’s called infinite series.

Now the question is How we can achieve this, in Latex. To achieve this there are many formulas of series in math and we can apply these formulas in Latex. For this purpose, we use dollar signs ‘$’ backward slashes ‘\’ brackets and predefined keywords like ‘infty’.

Let’s see the implementation of series formulas in Latex.

  1. How we can write Symbols

In the above examples we discuss math mode in LaTeX happens inside the dollar signs ‘$’, inside the square brackets ‘[ ]’ slashes ‘\’ and inside equation and displaystyle environments. Now we see a chart which shows what is possible in a math environment:
